The Alignment Sessions ๑ Start Or Deepen Your Yoga Practice

A great way to deepen your yoga practice or start your yoga practice with Suze's Alignment Sessions. This class is open to all levels and offers benefits for beginners as well as more advanced practitioners.

Getting on our hand, whether this is in a downward dog or a handstand can be challenging and feel awkward as we are not used to bare that much of our bodyweight on our hands. Besides awkward it can also become very uncomfortable for our shoulders, neck and wrist if we don’t know the alignment that creates a strong structure that can support your bodyweight.

In this class Suze will take you trough a clear explanation of the use of your shoulders, how to avoid baring too much weight in the wrists and shoulders and techniques that allow you to feel steady and comfortable on your hands. You get to apply the techniques in poses like downward dog, bakasana and handstand prep or against de wall.

The standing postures are an important part of each yoga practice as they get your body ready for the deeper poses that might follow. They engage and build strength in the legs but also open the hips, hamstrings and quadriceps, depending on the pose. Each pose includes a lot of different actions. Having a full understanding of the building blocs and purpose of the different poses allows you to practice intelligently and with purpose.

In this class Suze will guide you through different standing poses like Warrior I and II, Parsvakonasana and Trikonasana. You will understand the building blocs of the different poses, their purpose and benefits.

As forward folds allow us to protect the vital parts of our body from the outside world, they tend to feel soothing and comforting. They stretch the backs of the legs and the spine. For many people however they don’t feel as comfortable as they would like and instead of feeling soothed, they feel stuck and contracted. Luckily the right alignment actions can make a world of difference!

In this class Suze will guide you through different standing and sitting forward folds while applying the alignment principles that allow you to stretch the back of your body in a healthy and safe way. You will learn how to create more length in the spine and stretch the mid section of your calves and hamstrings while protecting the attachments. Golden tips for both very flexible and inflexible bodies!

Back bends are potent poses to open not only the front of our body, but with that our hearts. A supportive backbend opens the body and the mind and leaves you feeling energized and free. Backbend however are also challenging for many people, for different reasons. A pinching feeling in the lower back, not being able to straighten the arms in full wheel pose, tightness in the shoulders and neck in cobra, are common for many people.

In this class you will learn the alignment that allows you to create space in the lower back, engage the muscles in your back and find length in the upper body that allows you to tools that allow you to practice pain free backbends. Suze will guide you through a variety of backbends and the appropriate counter poses that create a balanced practice.

Our hips play an important part in our lower back healthy and general mobility. Hip-openers can be a great way to create more space and a fuller range of movement. At the same time hip-openers, when not practiced with awareness of alignment, can often lead to sensitivity or injury in the knees, ankles or the psoas muscle.

In the class Suze will explain the anatomy of the hips and the actions that make hip-openers safe and effective, allowing you to get the most out of your practice. Whether you are flexible or not, understanding of the anatomy of the hips and what happens when we ‘open’ them in different asana’s gives you the opportunity to create a hip-opener practice that is stable and offers you all the healing benefits that hip-openers have to offer.
