Vegetarian Organic Food

The food at The Conscious Club is completely vegetarian, which means that it excludes all meat and fish products from its assortment. All of the ingredients are organic for health and environmental reasons. Besides vegetarian food, we strive for mostly vegan ingredients, which don't contain any animal products.

We know that the way to a persons heart is through the stomach, that's why we only work with the best ingredients and highest quality food. Our soul food is made from our own authentic, homemade recipes and with lots of love in our kitchen.

THE ENVIRONMENT

Global warming, also referred to as climate change, is the observed century-scale rise in the average temperature of the Earth's climate system and its related effects. Global warming is the biggest threat facing the earth today.

Global Warming
Global warming occurs when carbon dioxide (CO2) and other air pollutants and greenhouse gasses collect in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that have bounced off the earth’s surface. Normally, this radiation would escape into space - but these pollutants, which can last for years to centuries in the atmosphere, trap the heat and cause the planet to get hotter. That's what's known as the greenhouse effect.

Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions are for 51% due to livestock and their byproducts. 13% are due to transport; road, rail, air and marine.

Livestock is responsible for 65% nitrous oxide emissions, a greenhouse gas 296 times more destructive than CO2.

Rainforest destruction
Animal agriculture is responsible for 91% of Amazone destruction. A shocking 6000m2 of rainforest are being cleared every second. The numbers are devastating, Palm oil is responsible for a 105 billion square meters of cleared rainforest and animal agriculture for 550 billion square meters of cleared rainforest. As humans on earth we are life dependent on the oxygen from the rainforest. Destructing it, is suicide.

Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution and habitat destruction. A 110 animals and insect species are being lost every day from rainforest destruction.

Land & Water
Livestock covers 45% of the Earth's total land. One third of the land is desertified due to livestock.

Just to get an impression: with 1,5 acres of land (6070m2) you can produce either 167.783kg of plant based food or 170kg of meat.

The meat and dairy industry use 1/3 of Earth's fresh water. To make one hamburger, you need 3000 liters of water, which is the equivalent to showering for 2 months.

Waste
The waste of a farm with 2500 dairy cows is equal to the waste from a city of 411.000 people, that's half the population of Amsterdam. Per minute a 3.2 million KG of excrement are produced by animals raised for food in the U.S.. 

Fisheries
Three out of four fisheries are exploited. 80.4 million metric tons of fish are pulled from the ocean each year. For every 1kg of fish caught, 5kg of unintended marine species are caught and discarded as by-kill.

Farmed fish is the new cattle industry. They are packed in baths of antibiotics and other unhealthy toxics. They have no swimming space, to give an example; a catfish of 1,25 KG has only 3 liters to swim in. Wild fish and farmed fish have no welfare conditions, yet they suffer from anxiety, pain, stress and fear. Besides that many fish get slaughtered without stunning which leads to painful death. 

Ice Cap Melting
Massive ice sheets at opposite ends of the Earth are melting at an unprecedented rate. Using satellite mapping technology, a German research team found that ice sheets in Greenland and Western Antarctica, spanning thousands of miles, are losing 500 cubic kilometers (about 120 cubic miles) of ice per year. The volume of loss in Greenland has doubled and that in the West Antarctic, ice sheet loss has tripled, since 2009.

It is very important that the polar ice caps are frozen because the snow they are covered with reflects a large amount of light back into space that would otherwise increase the overall temperature of Earth. So you can see this is a serious problem. The polar ice caps help keep Earth a nice temperature, but the melting of polar ice caps increases the rate of global warming.

Maintaining the Earth's temperature is very important to all the organisms that live in or around the polar ice caps. Despite being frozen and mostly covered with snow or ice, many small plants, invertebrates, and animals depend on the polar ice caps for food and shelter. Without the polar ice caps, many of these species would go extinct because they are well adapted to the climate and resources in these regions.

ORGANIC FARMING

According to The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations there are 6 main benefits to organic farming over regular farming: sustainability over the long term, water, air and climate change, biodiversity, genetically modified organisms and ecological services.

Organic agriculture considers the medium- and long-term effect of agricultural interventions on the agro-ecosystem. It aims to produce food while establishing an ecological balance to prevent soil fertility or pest problems. Opposed to conventional farming that focuses on the short-term gains but causes pollution and unfertile soil in the long run.

Polluted water
In many agriculture areas the pollution of groundwater caused by with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides is a major problem. These are prohibited in organic agriculture. Instead organic fertilizers and organic systems are used that restore and enhance the soil.

Air & climate change
Organic agriculture reduces non-renewable energy use in two ways. First by decreasing agrochemical needs, witch requires high quantities of fossil fuel to be produced. And secondly by enhancing the ability of the soil to store carbon, thereby absorbing C02.

Biodiversity
The number of studies on organic farming and biodiversity increased significantly within the last years. A recent study reporting on a meta-analysis of 766 scientific papers concluded that organic farming produces more biodiversity than other farming systems.

At the gene level, traditional and adapted seeds and breeds are preferred for their greater resistance to diseases and their resilience to climatic stress.

 At the species level, diverse combinations of plants and animals optimize nutrient and energy cycling for agricultural production.

 At the ecosystem level, the maintenance of natural areas within and around organic fields and absence of chemical inputs create suitable habitats for wildlife.

GMO FREE

A Genetic Modified Organism (GMO), is any organism whose DNA has been altered using genetic engineering methods. In most cases, the aim is to introduce a new trait to the organism which does not occur naturally in the species. Examples in genetic modified crops are to include resistance to certain pests or diseases, so the crop will survive.

The extinction of honeybees
Believe it or not, you have a bee to thank for every one in three bites of food you eat. The honeybees are our most important food pollinators.

Since 2005, a malady named The Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has killed honeybees on a massive scale in United States and in Europe. Bee colony collapse disorder kills worker bees that have left the hive to search for food. They simply don't come back.

Between 1947 and 2005, the number of bees in the United States declined by over 40 percent, from 5.9 million to 2.4 million. In Europe it declined with 25%.

In April 2016, researchers reported that U.S. beekeepers lost 44 percent of their colonies in the prior 12 months. That's up from 42.1 percent in 2015, and 39 percent in 2014.

Pesticides
A powerful new class of pesticides known as neonicotinoids was incorporated by Monsanto/Bayer into GMO plants. It's explosive growth of use since 2005 has roughly tracked rising bee deaths.

The U.S. government has finally admitted after a report in 2016, that neonicotinoids are to blame for the catastrophic bee deaths that have occurred over the last decade.

The report confirms what environmentalists and beekeepers have implored for years: neonicotinoids weaken, disorient and kill honeybees. 
The analysis emphatically highlights imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid, as particularly harmful.

Imadacloprid in Europe & Holland
Did you know that imidacloprid was allowed on the list of crop pesticides in Europe from 2009 until 2019? The European Commission banned the pesticide from the list 2013 because of the shocking rising bee deaths.

There's also a direct link with imadacloprid, water pollution and a declining local bird population. In some parts of Holland they found over 10.000 times the amount of allowed imadacloprid in the water. The measurements were done between 2005 and 2006 by Rijkswaterstaat in the west of Holland where there are many greenhouses, bulb growing and arboriculture. Besides a dying bee population, local insect eating birds like starling, skylark, swallow and the eurasian tree sparrow have disappeared increasingly.

GMO Free with organic farming
The use of GMOs within organic systems is not permitted during any stage of organic food production, processing or handling.

Organic agriculture is taking the precautionary approach to GMOs and chooses to encourage natural biodiversity. The organic label therefore provides an assurance that GMOs have not been used intentionally in the production and processing of the organic products.

This is something that cannot be guaranteed in conventional products, as labelling the presence of GMOs in food products has not yet come into force in most countries. However, with increasing GMO use in conventional agriculture and due to the method of transmission of GMOs in the environment (e.g. through pollen), organic agriculture will not be able to ensure that organic products are completely GMO free in the future.

Ecological services
The impact of organic agriculture favours both agricultural production and nature conservation. By opting for organic products, the consumer through his/her purchasing power promotes a less polluting agricultural system. The hidden costs of agriculture to the environment in terms of natural resource degradation are reduced.
