Autumn Equinox: Balance and Harmony
Are you already excited for sweaters, pumpkin spice everything, crunchy leaves, and beautiful autumnal colors? Great news for you, the equinox on Sunday morning, the 23rd of September at 03:54 AM, marks the transition from summer to fall. So be ready to take your favorite sweater out!
Annually, two equinoxes take place: the vernal equinox in March and the autumnal equinox in September. During an equinox, the sun crosses the celestial equator which makes the length of day and night approximately equal. The name equinox also refers to this occurrence of equal day and night time: equinox derives from the Latin word aequus (equal) and nox (night).
This astronomical event that marks the transition to autumn also has an astrological influence on you because the equinox at the same time coincides with the shift from the Virgo season to the Libra season. Virgo season marked self-reflection, self-criticism, and self-improvement. After this weary Virgo perfectionist energy, you can welcome the much-needed harmony and balance of Libra. The Libra season focuses on balance not only within yourself but also in relation to others and the planet. With the help of the harmonious Libra, integrate all the reflections from Virgo. It’s time for change!
This special occurrence of course goes hand in hand with celebrations. In China, the fall equinox is celebrated at the Mid-Autumn festival, also called the Moon Festival. During this festival, summer’s abundant harvest is celebrated with delicious pastries such as the moon cake. However, the celebration of the equinox is not a recent development. The belief in the spiritual power of the equinox dates back to the Mayan time. The Mayans celebrated the equinox with a sacrificial ritual by the pyramid El Castillo at Chichen Itza, Mexico. The four staircases that run down the pyramid are built in such a way that on the day of the equinox, the sunlight that shines down the stairs looks like a giant snake.
Some interesting facts about the equinox:
- From the equinox onwards, the day becomes shorter and the nights become longer until the winter solstice in December—the longest night of the year.
- The full moon nearest to the autumnal equinox is called a Harvest Moon. There will be a separate article about the September full moon on the 23rd of September, make sure to read it!
